One of Chicago's most important contributions to American social reform
was the settlement house, which provided the poor with educational and
recreational programs. This particular institution was one of the city's
earliest, aiding Polish immigrants. It was founded by educator Charles
Zueblin of Northwestern University. The Arts & Crafts-style structure
was designed by architects known for their settlement house designs,
including portions of Jane Addams' Hull House, another Chicago Landmark.
